The land was originally home to the Khoisan, Zulu, Xhosa, and Sotho peoples, among others.

The colonial era began with the Dutch East India Company in 1652, followed by British rule in the 19th century after the Napoleonic Wars. The territory was officially named the "Union of South Africa" in 1910, uniting British colonies and Boer republics under the British Crown.

This name simply described its place on the map while excluding the majority population. After decades of struggle against the brutal apartheid regime, the nation held its first democratic elections in 1994.

It retained the name 🇿🇦 South Africa but was reborn as the "Rainbow Nation," a title embracing its diverse cultures and symbolising a new era of unity and freedom for all its people.
