The legacy of British colonialism in Africa presents a multifaceted picture.
π¬π§ Britain ruled many African countries, but they often left them in a better state to survive on their own.
They trained local people to run things and when it was time to go, they mostly let go. Countries like π§πΌ Botswana, π³π¬ Nigeria, π¨π² British Cameroon, πΏπΌ Zimbabwe and more were given a fair chance to build themselves up.
The British approach often emphasized indirect rule and local governance and preservation of some traditional structures, fostering a sense of continuity.
The Disruptive Colonizers. French assimilation policies aimed to erase local cultures, while Belgian rule in the Congo was notoriously exploitative. France and Belgium were different. They did not really leave.
π«π· France still controls the money of many African countries today. These countries have to keep their savings in France, which keeps them poor and begging for loans.
π§πͺ Belgium stripped Congo of everything and left nothing behind.
π¬π§ Britain ended the partnership. France and Belgium just changed how they hold the leash.
