🇳🇬 The name "Nigeria" comes from the River Niger, coined by British journalist Flora Shaw in the 1890s. She fused "Niger" with the suffix "-ia," meaning "land of the Niger River."
Before this, the region thrived as powerful independent kingdoms—Oyo, Benin, Sokoto, and Kanem-Bornu. These were later unified under British colonial rule as the "Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria" in 1914.
Upon independence in 1960, the nation chose to retain this name. By reclaiming it, 🇳🇬 Nigeria transformed a colonial label into a proud symbol of unity, forging a modern identity rooted in its ancient civilizations and diverse heritage.
