The Journey of Zimbabwe: From Rhodesia to a New Identity
πΏπΌ The name "Zimbabwe" originates from the Shona phrase "dzimba dzemabwe," meaning "houses of stone." It honours the ancient city of Great Zimbabwe, a medieval UNESCO World Heritage site and enduring symbol of pre-colonial brilliance and indigenous power.
Before adopting this name, the nation was known as Rhodesia, a title bestowed during British colonial rule in honour of Cecil John Rhodes.
Upon gaining independence in 1980, the new country deliberately chose to shed this colonial label.
By reclaiming the name πΏπΌ Zimbabwe, the nation paid homage to its legendary stone monuments and forged a proud new identity rooted in its own rich heritage. πΏπΌ
