🇨🇲 Cameroon's name dates back to 1472 when Portuguese explorers led by Fernando Pó arrived at the Wouri River estuary. They found the river teeming with crayfish and named it Rio dos Camarões ("River of Prawns") .
This name eventually expanded to describe the coastal region and nearby mountains.
Later, 🇩🇪 German colonizers adapted it to Kamerun for their protectorate . Upon gaining independence in 1960, the country adopted the modern spelling Cameroon , evolving from a Portuguese river filled with prawns to the proud nation it is today.
